Health – Pilot Projects

Using the power of sport and education Watford FC’s Community Sports and Education Trust is keen to work in partnership with local and regional agencies in order to develop new health related pilot projects.

Increasing physical activity and promoting healthy lifestyles is an integral aspect of many of the Trust’s projects.  Over the years we have developed a number of projects promoting healthy living and healthy lifestyles.  Some examples of these are detailed below;

Healthy Hornets - Delivered in primary schools to pupils in years five and six. The programme ran over six weeks with each class participating for an hour per week.  The first 15 minutes was delivered in the classroom with the pupils working from the Healthy Hornets work book and joining in group discussions followed by 45 minutes of practical activity including dynamic stretches and movements, team invasion games, skill based drills and games.  At the end of each session the children were set fun homework tasks which led onto the following week’s discussion.

Player Profile Healthy Living Cards – Tesco sponsored a player profile card which contained details of Watford FC players including their favourite meals and drinks.  On the reverse of each card was a healthy eating meal option which included ingredients and cooking instructions.

Fit 4 Football Fit 4 Life
- This programme was delivered in schools and promoted the elements of healthy living as well as addressing lifestyle issues such as smoking and substance misuse.

Special Events – These include such things as player appearances and training ground visits.  The Trust ran a healthy living poster competition with ten pupils from the winning school visiting the Club’s training ground to watch players train, help serve lunch and talk to players about how important a healthy body is as a sportsman.

In addition to some of the examples given above the Trust can also run pilot projects by utilising sport to focus on the following health and personal/social development issues;

Anti-smoking
Healthy weight – childhood obesity
Alcohol – binge drinking
Other substance misuse
Bullying
Truancy
Racism
