Watford FC and The Hertswood Academy have successfully been running the Centre of Football Excellence for over six years now. Our exciting programme, will give players between the ages of 16 and 19 the chance to combine academic studies with practical football experience.
During the past few years, six of our Impact players have achieved international honours by representing their countries at U17, U19, U20, U21 and full senior level for Montserrat, Libya, Albania and Bosnia respectively.
In addition to the current intake of players, it is important to mention the success of Britt Assombalonga who started his career on the Watford Hertswood Academy, Centre of Football Excellence programme.
Britt made a handful of 1st team appearances Watford FC, spent a loan season in League two for Southend United and in the summer of 2013 he became Peterborough United’s record signing where he is currently scoring goals on a regular basis.
During the past eight months, three WFC Hertswood Academy players have signed contracts at professional club’s which include Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United respectively!
The unique package is a fantastic opportunity for young people keen to develop their talent on the football pitch and find a route into a career in football coaching, the leisure industry or university.
All students on the programme will participate in regular competitive football matches. Our five teams are entered into the Premier/Football Development League, the Football Conference Youth League, the British Colleges League and the Premier/Football Development Reserve League. Each league hosts a demanding and high standard of football through which students who perform consistently well may progress to Watford FC’s Academy.
Unlike other schemes, where choices may be restricted by facilities and expertise, all courses are based at The Hertswood Academy and staffed by fully qualified professionals. This allows flexibility for students to choose from a combination of pathways to match their ability, aptitude, interests and aspirations.
Students will receive training in football coaching leading to FA Coaching badges, Leadership Through Football, emergency aid training, as well as a grounding in child protection issues and practice. They will train daily and play on a competitive basis, an experience similar to football academies nationwide to which students may progress.
In addition to the Watford FC player pathway, we have also been keen to source additional exit routes to the players who have been unsuccessful in gaining contracts. Selected players from the Watford IMPACT programme have been able to attend trials at other professional and semi professional clubs.
The WFC IMPACT programme also provides the players with additional opportunities for example training and filming a new football coaching programme with former England and Arsenal hero Ian Wright, pre season training with the British Riot Police, training with the male and female, FIFA Olympic officials to prepare for the London 2012 Football Tournament and much more!
Completing any one of the range of pathways we offer will give students the skills required to help them progress to a higher standard of education and football as well as gain experience necessary, to work in community football coaching and other areas within the sports industry.
If you are currently in year 11 or 12 and would like to register for the next trials, please email your football CV to Chris Andrews firstname.lastname@example.org
