FreeActivityandFoodforyoungstersatPLKickscourse

The impact of the pandemic on young people has been significant, with the most vulnerable experiencing food poverty, social isolation, poor mental health, and physical inactivity. To help provide a positive end to the year, the Premier League, Premier League Charitable Fund and Barclays came together to fund PL Kicks Holiday Activity and Food Camps across the country.

Watford Football Club’s Community Sports and Education Trust delivered two free three-day festive themed holiday courses; one at Cedars Youth & Community Centre in Harrow Weald and one at Meriden Community Centre in Watford, from 21st to 23rd December. The course targeted boys and girls aged 8-11 years old from local primary schools – with over 50 children attending across both venues.

The course included football and team building activities, a nutritious meal at lunchtime, a goody bag from the Premier League and interactive workshops and quizzes – as well as a visit from Harry the Hornet!

GoKula, a local vegetarian charity, supplied not only a hot and cold food option each day, but a selection of healthy snacks and treats. The charity was also kind enough to donate small gifts and presents for the children to take home for Christmas Day – which were very much appreciated!

A parent of one of the participating children said:

“The football programme had a positive impact and responded to the needs of our children to develop physically, emotionally, and socially.  The sessions were delivered by experienced professionals who succeeded to couple learning, joy and fun.  Certainly, the children were so happy with their presents and the whole experience will be memorable!”

A post-activity survey found that 100% of the children enjoyed the courses, with 95% of the children wanting to attend future PL Kicks Holiday Courses.
