With university clearing still open and spaces available on a foundation degree linked with a professional football club – Watford FC, your future football career could be just around the corner. This foundation degree in ‘Football Development & Coaching’ is delivered by Watford FC’s Community Sports and Education Trust and awarded by Middlesex University. The course is recognised as a unique work-based learning qualification exposing students to valuable work experience and preparing them for employment. In fact, the foundation degree boasts that 100% of alumni are either in paid employment or continuing their studies.
Launched in 2020, this programme was developed in response to a rapidly growing football industry within the UK. The degree combines practical coaching, underpinning theory and work-based learning. Students will study the fundamentals of Football Development and its importance within local communities as well as the science of human movement, physiology, psychology and fitness, and how this relates to more elite-level players. Students will also work towards their FA Level 1 and 2 as part of the course.
Students will study at Middlesex University and the Trust’s fully equipped hub in Harrow-Cedars Youth & Community Centre. Students will also receive free Watford FC kit to wear when on work placements.
Graduate of the foundation degree Bernado said:
“Taking this course provided me not only with significant professional skills, allowing me to deepen my knowledge about football, including training planning, managing relationships with players, and enhancing my tactical and technical understanding of the game, but also offered insight into the different approaches needed for various age groups, addressing both their physical and psychological needs. The course also gave me the opportunity to expand my knowledge in other areas of football, such as the social impact clubs have in their communities.
My experience included placements with the Watford FC Trust, where I was involved in both coaching and social events, this allowed me to grow not just as a coach but also as an active contributor to society. I highly recommend this course, not only for its rich knowledge base but also for the welcoming and supportive environment provided by the staff. I cherish the experiences and memories that make me want to relive those moments.”
Whilst fellow graduate Amin added:

The course has deepened my understanding of the sport, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. The lectures were particularly invaluable, with Ms Laura Figg, our course leader, playing a crucial role in my academic growth. Her expertise and dedication inspired me to pursue further studies, leading me to a Master’s in Sports Performance Analysis also at Middlesex University. This journey has solidified my passion for the field and has equipped me with the skills needed to excel in the sports industry.”
