In January of 2024 the Trust launched ‘Tactically Speaking’ it’s new 5-year strategy to guide us towards our vision of ‘One goal – healthier, happier, stronger communities’.
We now have a number of vacancies for trustees to join our Board. As a trustee you will be part of a talented team responsible for the direction of the Trust, the delivery of its core purposes, and ensuring that we achieve our strategic objectives, community impact and legal and financial obligations.
We are looking to recruit passionate, committed, inclusive and value driven trustees who can help to guide and support our Senior Leadership Team to deliver our new strategic objectives and ambitions.
Who we are and what we do
Watford Football Club is the ‘original family club’ and has a long and proud tradition of serving its community. Watford FC Community Sports and Education Trust (the ‘Trust’) is a self-financing registered charity engaging with our communities through sport, physical activity and learning on behalf of Watford Football Club.
The Trust provides community support across Hertfordshire and Harrow and delivers more than 25 projects across all age groups. We have invested over £6m in our facilities, including our Community Hubs in Watford and Harrow and have a hugely successful track record of delivering positive change for over 30 years.
We are always exploring new ventures and partnerships to expand our delivery and extend our reach. Managing exciting changes alongside the continued growth of the Trust and developing our people and our culture in line with our new 5-year strategy are the key challenges we face.
The right people and the right blend
To reflect the breadth of work we do, and our reach across all our communities, we need a diverse Board of Trustees with an extensive set of skills and experience. Our Board will reflect and represent the communities in which we work. It will embody a high degree of expertise and knowledge to protect the Trust’s best interests and drive a creative and challenging approach to support the Trust’s ambitions by driving growth and continuous improvement across all our work.
We particularly welcome applications from people from ethnically diverse communities, females, disabled people and those from the LGBTQ+ community.
The importance of our Trustees
Registered with the Charities Commission, we are governed in accordance with charitable law and comply to the Charity Code of Governance. We will always look to develop and maintain the highest standards of governance. Our Board of Trustees carry out a range of duties to ensure we are always compliant and dynamic. Trustees have:

  • a duty of care, to ensure we are well run and efficient and that professional advice is sought to manage risk,
  • a duty of prudence in respect of managing the charity’s assets.

Your commitment
Trustees are expected to attend all Board meetings. These are held a minimum of 4 times a year and last for between 2 and 3 hours, papers are distributed ahead of the meetings. Trustees will be asked to join one of the board sub committees which also meet ahead of each Board meeting, and to attend Trust events on a couple of occasions each year to see our projects in action. Successful candidates will have to undergo a DBS check. The role is a voluntary one and is unpaid but is hugely rewarding in many other ways.
